4awesome item  Jun 21, 2009

I own this item and thouroughly enjoy it. My only concern is that when you pump it it seems to get stuck when the tank is almost full and occasionally won't "Gush oil" don't let that stop you from buying this product though, mine could have a defect or just not be worn in yet. (i've only had it for 1 day) Overall i highly reccomend it.

4Works properly with a penny and some vegetable oil.  Dec 16, 2011
By Michael Herbert
I read the reviews before purchasing and figured there must be a solution to it not functioning right out of the box so I bought one on a hunch. The engines don't work right without oil after all.

When you push the arm down the "oil" should rise until the white is gone then the oil should "gush". Pushing the spigot down should reset the white cover. The white piece is what actually moves up. The problem is the mechanisms aren't properly aligned at the top for everything to function reliably.

This may work for others:
1. Remove the four screws around the top where the oil gushes.
2. Carefully lift the top off, including the wood piece that says "Sodor Oil Company". Keep the oil pushed down so the trigger does not fall inside.
3. Look down inside the brown tube. Ours had a piece of cardboard sitting on top of the white part that rises (a possible attempt to fix it by the manufacturer). Cardboard will not hold its shape under enough pressure so remove it.
4. Place a penny (face up for luck) on top of the white piece.
5. Now for the top. While holding the oil down flip it over and look at the bottom. The three green prongs are the trigger. When the white part rises high enough it bumps this but the white part doesn't push very hard. We need a hair trigger.
6. CAUTION: WD-40 MAY HARM THE PAINT JOB! White lithium grease would be ideal. It will hold on long enough for you child's grandchildren to play with the derrick, auto parts stores always have it. In a pinch, use vegetable oil on the three prongs and try to get a little to go into the holes the prongs stick out of.
7. Play with it until you feel like it takes very little to make it "gush". If you "lose" the prongs in the holes like I did. Just carefully shake it around, gently push the oil down, try a paper clip, whatever to get the prongs lined up over the holes again.
8. Line the top piece up onto the derrick. Don't screw it down just hold it down and play with it to see if everything is aligned. Once the oil "gushes" ours cannot be "locked" back down until the white is reset with the spigot. You could try a dime instead of a penny. Find the sweet spot on yours. The oil won't gush if it isn't high enough and the spigot can't reset the white if it is too high so you have to get it just right. You might also try some lubricant on the white piece where it has a small tab that keeps it aligned in the orange tube. It looks like that may be a possible sticking point. Good luck!
9. Don't forget to put the screws back in. Careful, they strip easily.

It's pretty cool when it functions right.

3Looks good but has issues.  Mar 22, 2010

Overall look and feel of this toy was sturdy as shown in picture. The oil pump does not work with the pop up oil often sticking. Summary - looks good but oil pump may or may not work.

2Defective right out of the box!  Jan 01, 2010

I really expected this Thomas and friends wooden Railway Oil derrick to be sturdy, well made, and a value. Right out of the box, the toy didn't work correctly. The oil gusher won't pop and the crank slips. Pretty disappointing for Christmas. Thomas wooden toys are pricy, and I expect them to work properly. This Nana was underwhelmed to say the least.

2Ain't what she used to be  Jan 28, 2011

My kids love the thing. For me, the oil derrick was a big disappointment considering Learning Curve's track record with high quality wooden toys. Compared to the many clever destinations and buildings of the Thomas and Friends line, this one lacks ingenuity, charm and quality. It's very big, and awkward to use. There is nothing clever about the mechanism. Short of disappointing any children who just want the thing, save your money on this one folks.
