3A Quality Product - With One Big Drawback  Jan 29, 2011
By G-Fan
Oh my gosh, how I wanted to love this figure of the iconic giant robot from The Day The Earth Stood Still. Gort has long been one of my favorite characters in all of science fiction, I thought it would be just so cool to have a 16 inch statue of him on display in my TV room.

I must admit that the photograph in the product description is quite accurate, though it somehow flatters the actual figure more than it should. In the photo Gort looks tall and lean - certainly leaner than Gort did in the 1951 film TDTESS. Maybe it's just my imagination, but for some reason the actual figure looks even taller and leaner than in the photo. Too much so, in my opinion. The shoulders seem narrower for one thing, and the legs in particular just seem too long. My wife referred to the figure as "anorexic Gort", and that's pretty close. Gort in the movie was supposed to be very tall, but this Gort looks better suited to playing center in the NBA rather than policing and destroying non-compliant planets. It should have been easy enough to sculpt a more accurate representation of Gort - somehow, the proportions of this figure just seem out of whack. Thus my overall disappointment. On a scale of 1 to 5, I probably would only give the sculpt a 2. However, the overall good quality of the casting, the heavy feel of it, and the fact that it's a limited edition, push it up to a 3. Besides, it's Gort! As noted by another reviewer, Gort does not come in a window display box, which is unfortunate. But considering the resin figure came completely (and securely) encased in styrofoam inside the box, I suppose that it might have been rather difficult - and pointless - to have a display panel.

(On a side note, should you choose to purchase one of these, when opening the box, don't make the same mistake I made. The styrofoam block protecting the figure is not just on the top and bottom of the box. It totally encompasses the figure. I tried to gently remove the "top" of the foam, only to have it crumble in my fingers. Instead, open the end of the box and carefully tip it over to allow the whole styrofoam block to slip out. This will keep the foam from breaking apart, as well as leaving it intact should you decide to return the figure.)

Curiously too, the enclosed Certificate of Authenticity states that Gort is a registered trademark of Rocket USA Inc, the manufacturer of the statue. I guess 20th Century Fox must have sold the rights to the name and image at some point. Anyone know about this?

Bottom line, if I had been able to see this figure in person rather than base my purchase upon the product picture, I probably would not have bought it. I'm sure there are better Gort figures out there. I sort of wish I had saved my money for one of those.

Last minute addendum: I tried standing my Gort behind several other smaller action figures, and it actually improved its overall appearance. I guess it somewhat hides the figure's long legs, making the upper torso look slightly bulkier, thus better. Not really an ideal solution, as it's a shame to have to mask part of the figure to make it look better. But it's the best solution that I can think of at the moment. Perhaps a mod buildup is in order. Of course that would negate any collectible aspect to the figure, but I'm pretty confident I could improve on what Rocket USA came up with for this figure.

Very solid statue and is worth every penny of the $29 price tag. If you are a fan of Gort, then you will want this one for your collection.

4Day the Earth Stood Still Gort 16-Inch Statue  May 17, 2011
By Randy S. North Canton, OH
Well, first, you must be a fan of the 1951 TV Movie, The Day the Earth Stood Still to appreciate this statue. Gort in the 1951 movie was a simple figure back then, and this replicated statue is a simple one today. It is what it is, and my expectation of this statue was met when I received it. It does look well in the background of my other figure collectibles, as it hovers over them at being 16 inches tall. It's just a rememberance of yesteryear. If this all makes sense to you, then I suggest you buy it for the $30.00!

1Way over priced  Dec 26, 2007

This collectible is way overpriced for what you get. Cheap cardboard box that does not even have a window flap to view the figure, you have to open the box to see it which is not usually something people like to do with a collectible. The figure itself is a sold blob of plastic no articulation or paint apps to speak of. I would say this item cost about $5 to produce in China and it looks it, it's a dullgray not shiny like the character or picture here.

If you can find it for $25-$30 then buy it, that's all it's worth.

4Gort figure  May 13, 2010

Nice replica of the 50's Science Fiction classic. Can't say the detail is great because the original suit in the film was not a detailed creation (say, like, Robby the Robot). If your're a fan, get this Gort!
