3Doesn't work as expected  Jul 31, 2009
By flippythefish
Another reviewer mentioned that the flatbed isn't wide enough to hold other trains. That's definitely true and very frustrating. You might be able to carefully balance another train on the flatbed, but it falls off as soon as you move it. My son doesn't even play with the flatbed, although he will occasionally use the crane to pull trains onto the track or along the track. Other than that, it's as well-made as all the other Thomas Wooden Railway items we have.

4Nice Addition, with only one flaw.  Dec 29, 2008
By Joseph P. Beck "JPB"
It's a nice addition to my son's collection. However, the flat bed that comes with the crane is not wide enough for any of the cars or trains to sit on. Just a heads up.

5Little parts fun for little hands  May 24, 2005
By Janean "BroadwayMatinee dot com"
After pushing and pulling her favorite trains, our daughter (almost two) likes to swing the yellow arm around and hook the magnets onto other trains. She has no idea what a "breakdown train" is, but she knows this is visually and functionally different than the other engines and cars. The demo car's string and crane has held up well under dozens of other hands.

3Almost There  Apr 09, 2010
By H. Hancock "Hal Hancock"
Unlike many wooden railway pieces, this one is worth an evaluation, since it is a potential central piece.

This is a good concept for a wooden railway piece, and has an almost-there design. Just a bit more effort on the production (manufacturing) would have helped also.

But....if the good price is the result of a quick and low-effort job, then it's a trade-off we can live with. I'd rather not pay another $5 more for a better design and quality, because even a better toy of this type will not occupy a child for long!

So...since the realistic amount of play a child will get from a piece like this -- one that can *fit* under a bridge and through a tunnel -- is only an hour or two cumulative, it is....good enough.

Problems? Well, the swiveling crane is hard to turn and also hard to lift and lower (manufacturing quality issue). 2nd, the reach of the crane is just-enough, which is probably a reasonable compromise, but sometimes disappointing.

Don't expect too much, and let the child do their own thing, and it is good enough.

Bottom line: recommended for train sets that already have at least 6 or 8 other engines/cars/trucks.

5flat bed train car  Feb 28, 2010
By J. Felske
My 3 year old son is obsessed with trains and wanted a flatbed train car for Christmas. This was the only flatbed we could find that didn't have the pegs on it to hold on freight. It has a small magnet on top so it can hold some things (he keeps trying to carry everything on it). He loves playing with this and if you ask him what Santa brought, he immediately says "flatbed train car". He also loves the crane portion and has become his favorite crane to use with all of the trains.
